Created in 1934, The Golden Gate Quartet was one of primary emblems to mark the arrival of Afro-American music in history. Inventing a unique musical genre, the quartet popularized Negro spirituals during the forties and fifties which Louis Armstrong then revealed to the world in 1958 with the “Good Book”. In May 2003, I asked The Golden Gate to record the Good Book’s repertory, directed by Clyde Wright, the second tenor since 1954. This a cappella recording benefits from modern recording techniques which enhances the original sound of the voices of The Golden Gate Quartet
